Windows 8

  • Windows 8 is the current release of the Windows Operating System, produced by Microsoft Corporation for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops and home theatre PCs.
  • The operating system was released manufacturing on August 1,2012 and was released for general availability on October 25, 2012.
  • Windows 8 introduces significant changes to the operating system's graphical user interface and platform, incorporating a new design language used by the other Microsoft products.
  • A new Start screen has replaced the Start menu used by the previous versions of Windows.
  • Windows 8 is also designed to run on tablets and the interface too has been simplified so that it works with touch screens.

Getting Started with Windows 8

  • Windows 8 can be confusing at first, since the interface has changed so much.
  • You'll need to know how to navigate the Start screen as well as the Desktop.
  • Although the Desktop looks very similar to the previous versions of Windows, it has one major change that Start menu has been removed.

To Sign In to Windows 8

When you're setting up the Windows 8, it will require you to create an account name and password to sign in. You can also create additional accounts and you'll have the option of associating each one with Microsoft account.

  1. Click anywhere on the lock screen to unlock the computer.
  2. Your user name and picture will appear. Type your password and then press Enter to sign in. Alternatively, you can press the back arrow to select a different user.
  3. The Start screen will reappear.

Navigating Windows 8

There are several ways to navigate through Windows 8, including hot corners, keyboard shortcuts, and gestures if you're using a tablet.

Using Hot Corners
Whether you're in the Start screen or the Desktop, you can navigate through Windows 8 by using hot corners. To use a hot corner, just hover the mouse in the corner of the screen, and it will open a toolbar or tile that you can click. Each corner performs a different task.

Lower left : When you're using an application (app), you can click in the lower-left corner to switch back to the Start screen.

Upper left : If you click in the upper-left corner, it will switch to the previous application (app) that you were using.

Upper right or lower right :  You can hover the mouse in the upper-right or lower-right corner to open the Charms bar, which you'll use to adjust your computer's settings, manage printers and more.

If you have several application open simultaneously, you can switch between them by hovering the mouse in the upper-left corner and then moving the mouse down. This displays a list of all of your open applications and you can click the desired application (app) to switch to it.

Navigating on a Tablet

If you have a Windows 8 tablet, you can navigate by using swipe gestures instead of hot corners:

Swipe in from left edge lets you switch to a different open application.
Swipe in from right edge opens the Charms bar.

THE CHART WIZARD

A Wizard is a step by step process to achieve a desired result. The chart wizard takes us through a series of shapes to create charts in Excel. Data should be entered in the worksheet before starting wizard.

To open the chart wizard
Click the Insert menu
Click the Chart option

OR

Click the Chart Wizard icon in the Standard toolbar.

The Chart Wizard dialog box will display. This window allows creating two types of charts namely.

Standard Types - Contains built-in-chart types available in Excel.

Custom Types - Contains charts either based on standard types or defined by the user.

Following steps should be performed to create a chart using the Chart Wizard.

Step -1 : Select a Chart type

The first dialog box displays the various charts types. Each chart has two or more sub types from which one will be selected.

Step 2 : Source Data

This step deals with the source data for which the chart is created. In this step we need to specify the range of the worksheet cells that contain data.

Step 3 : Chart options

This step provides various options using which we can edit the chart. In this dialog box we can specify a title for the chart, assign axis labels, data labels or change the location of the legends in the chart.

Step 4 : Chart Location

The final step is to decide where to place the completed chart. We can specify where the chart has to be embedded with the data or placed in a separate chart sheet.

CHARTS - MS EXCEL

Charts :)

Charts are pictorial representation of large amounts of data. Representing data in terms of charts makes it interesting and easy for the users to see comparisons and trends in data. MS Excel provides us with one feature creating charts, which help us to represent data in a graphical format. If we want to compare the runs scored by players in 1st inning and 2nd inning, this comparison can be made easily if the data are available in the form of charts.

Classification of chart

The charts in excel can be classified as

Embedded Chart

Chart Sheet

Embedded Chart

An Embedded Chart is placed on a worksheet rather than on a separate sheet. Embedded Chart is used when we want to display or print one or more charts with worksheet data.

Chart Sheet
A chart sheet is a part of a worksheet that contains only a chart. Chart sheet chart is used when we want to view or edit large or complex charts separately from the worksheet data or when we want to preserve screen space to work on the worksheet.

Basic Components of Chart

The basic components of charts remain the same whether it is column chart or any other type of chart. The basic components of chart are:

Chart Title :- The chart title helps the user to know the purpose of a chart.
Legend :- The key that describes each part shown in the chart.
Y Axis:- The line which shows values against the data of the X Axis.
X Axis :- The line which shows data that has values plotted against it.
Data :- It is the most important components of chart. Data refers to the information for which the chart is prepared. There should be at least two sets of data, one for X-Axis and the other for Y-Axis to create a chart.
