Android to Android: New phone? This is how the data transfer succeeds

A new Android smartphone, will usually take the data from the old device. If you change within the Android world, there are various moves and a few things to consider.

Android to Android: Transfer data with Google

  • The easiest way to transfer the data from the old Android smartphone to a new one is via Google.
  • Almost every Android user has set up a Google account on his Android phone. Some people do not know: Google synchronizes contacts, calendars, e-mails or app data.
  • So if you save your data directly via the Google account, you can easily switch to a new Android smartphone.
  • Please check Settings , Accounts , Google before changing hands on the old smartphone whether all relevant data is synchronized.
  • Use the icon with the three dots in the top right corner to trigger the backup manually with "Synchronize Now".
  • On Google Drive, under Backups, see if Google has created a device backup there.

  • Easily save images to Google Photos .
  • The app asks for the first start whether you want to save his pictures in the Google cloud.
  • Other files can be conveniently uploaded to Google Drive.
  • Most scores are backed up directly in Google Play games.
  • Larger game developers often offer their own cloud. On the new smartphone, select "copy data" during the initial setup and enter your Google Account information.
  • The rest will be done by Google for you. When the setup is complete, look for Google Photos and Google Driveal ready installed on the smartphone.
  • If not, download both apps from the Google Play Store. Important: Google does not backup all data. So do not include SMS and the call list. This can be done by using a third-party tool (see below).

Alternatively: send data via the old device

  • Since Android 5.0 Lollipop, the data can be transferred directly from the old Android device via Google's Nearby technology to the new one.
  • While setting up the new device, select "Copy data", bring the smartphone to Wi-Fi and then tap "Back up from an Android smartphone".
  • If both devices dominate the NFC technology, hold both phones back to back.
  • If not, place the smartphones side-by-side and match the security code displayed by the setup wizard. The data is then transmitted via Bluetooth or WLAN.
  • However, this did not work out smoothly in the test: While the Google Account information was sent easily, apps and their data fell by the wayside in three out of four cases.
  • The transfer can also be initiated with the Google Assistant, but only if the phrase "set up my device" is typed on the old Android smartphone. By language the app searches only online for assistance.

Android to Android: Moving tools from the manufacturer

  • Manufacturers such as Samsung or Sony offer apps for moving to a new device.
  • It should be noted that with two smartphones from different manufacturers can not always transfer all data.
  • Depending on your relocation helper, move contacts, emails, appointments, videos, photos, music, documents or notes to your newbie. The transfer runs via Bluetooth, WLAN and via mircoSD card via a PC.
  • The corresponding tools available on the Google Play Store: " Samsung Smart Switch Mobile ", " Xperia Transfer Mobile " (for Sony devices), " LG Mobile Switch (sender) " and " HTC Transfer Program".
  • The LG app is suitable only for data transfer from another manufacturer to a new LG smartphone. If both phones are LG, use the preinstalled backup software under Settings > General > Backup & Reset > LG Backup .
  • For Samsung's Moving App, you must also make sure that you first move your contacts to your Google or Samsung account, if they are stored only in the device memory or on a microSD card. To do this, open the phonebook and select More > Settings > Move device contacts to .

Android to Android: Third-party tools for the rest

  • Not all the data from the old to the new Android smartphone can be reached with the Google account or the removal helpers of the manufacturers.
  • Third-party tools often help here. Although there is a large selection of backup apps in the Google Play Store, only a handful are good enough.
  •  MyBackup, for example, only allows backing up important settings, apps, photos, contacts and SMS in the free version.
  • If you want to restore the data but on a different device, you have to grab the paid Pro version (6.99 euros).
  • But there are also apps that only back up certain data. How to save the free app " SMS Backup & Restore"Reliable your SMS and even the call log on the old device.
  • On the new smartphone, the app then restores it.

Android to Android: Backup in Messenger apps

  • Many messengers now also offer the option of packing chat profiles into the removal boxes.
  • For example, WhatsApp creates a backup every day that ends up in the smartphone's internal memory.
  • By activating the corresponding function, the app also saves your data on Google Drive.
  • Just open the messenger and tap on the icon with the three dots in the top right corner. Then go to Settings > Chats and Calls > Chat Backup > Back up to Google Drive and tap the Backup button .

No buck on Google? How to secure manually!

  • Short messages and the call list are also saved with "SMS Backup & Restore".
  • Anyone who places their contacts locally on their smartphone exports them to a VCF file.
  • Select the items you want to back up in the Contacts app and tap the three-dot icon in the top right corner. Via parts you either send your contacts via e-mail or store the file in the internal memory.
  • Just save your calendar to an ICS file with the free app " iCal Import / Export CalDAV ".
  • You can re-install your apps from the Google Play Store on the new smartphone, or back up in APK format using the App Backup & Restore app.

  • Most app data is saved with the " Helium " app .
  • You still need the computer program of the same name and you have to enable USB debugging in the developer options of Android (Activate under System > Over the phone > tap the build number 7 times).
  • Move photos, videos and other files to a microSD card and insert them into the new smartphone. To restore SMS, call log and calendar, install the appropriate apps and start the backup.
  • In the new contacts app, just import the VCF file.
