How to enable or disable my Internet browser's Autocomplete

This page is for users who are looking to toggle the Autocomplete data such as usernames, passwords, web addresses, and search queries, on or off. It is quite common for users to confuse Autocomplete with Autofill, and while they are not the same, many browsers use the same tools to enable and disable them. Users should also note that these are not the steps to delete individual search entries. To proceed, select your browser from the listing below and follow the steps.


  • Microsoft Edge users
  • Internet Explorer users
  • Mozilla Firefox users
  • Chrome users
  • Opera users

Microsoft Edge Users


Open Microsoft Edge.
Click More Microsoft Edge More icon in the upper right-hand corner of the window.
Select Settings from the drop-down menu that appears.
Scroll to the bottom of the list and select View advanced settings.
Under Show search and site suggestions as I type, click the toggle switch to turn Autocomplete on or off.


Microsoft Internet Explorer users


Open Internet Explorer.
Click Tools Internet explorer tools icon in the upper right-hand corner.
Select Internet Options from the drop-down menu.
Under the Content tab, in the Autocomplete section, click the Settings button.
Within this window, you can select the fields in which you'd like to store Autocomplete data by using the check boxes. This action turns Autocomplete On or Off based on what boxes are checked.
Once you have made your selections, click OK.

Mozilla Firefox users

Open Firefox.
Click Menu Firefox Menu Icon in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
Select Options from the drop-down menu.
Under the Privacy tab, in the History section, click the down arrow in the box next to Firefox will: and select Use custom settings for my history.
A number of check boxes should appear allowing you to customize what Firefox remembers from your browsing. The box labeled Remember search and form history toggles Autocomplete On or Off.
Once you have made your selections, close the Options tab.

Chrome


Open Chrome.
Click Menu Chrome Settings Icon in the upper right-hand corner.
From the drop-down menu select Settings.
At the bottom of the Settings window, click Show advanced settings...
Next, locate the Privacy section.
The check box labeled Use a prediction service to help complete searches and URLs typed in the address bar or the app launcher search box toggles Autocomplete On or Off.
Under the Passwords and forms tab, you may also want to toggle the Enable Autofill to fill out web forms in a single click check box.
Close the Settings window when you are finished.

Opera

Open the Opera Internet browser.
Click the Opera menu button button in the upper right-hand corner of the browser window.
Select Opera settings icon Settings from the drop-down menu that appears.
In the Settings window, select Privacy and security on the left-hand side of the screen.
Under the Autofill section, check or uncheck the box next to Enable auto-filling of forms on webpages to toggle Autocomplete.
When you're finished, close the Settings tab.
