Types of Charts

MS Excel provides many kinds of charts to display data. When we use Chart Wizard to create a chart or Chart type command to change an existing chart we can easily select the type we want from the list of standard or custom chart types. Some basic chart types are:-

Column Chart 

Column chart are among the most common chart. It is represented by vertical bars / columns to show the variations of different values of data items over a period of time.

Line Chart
This chart is useful to show the trends and changes taking place over a period of time. Each line shows the trend of a particular category. This type of chart generally seen during a cricket match, which shows the trend of a team at any point of time.

Pie Chart

This chart is useful when we want to represent each value of a data item to a total. Pie chart round in shape and displays the contribution of each value to a total.

Bar Chart

They are represented by a rectangular box in a tabular or columnar form. One can easily compare data from the bar chart.

Doughnut chart
Like a Pie chart, a Doughnut charts shows the relationship of parts to a whole. However, it can contain more than one data series. Each ring of Doughnut charts represents one data series.

Editing Charts

Once a chart is created in Excel, we can edit and format it anytime. Editing and formatting a chart include:

Changing the background of the chart
Changing the chart type
Moving and resizing the charts

Chart area refers to the background area where the chart is placed. Format Chart Area dialog box is used to format the chart area.

To open the Format Chart Area dialog box

Select the embedded chart by clicking on it.

Double click the background area of the chart.

The Format Chart Area dialog box will display. The options in this dialog box allow us to change the background color of the chart, applying a border or giving a shadow effect to the chart. We can also format the chart title, the axis labels, the data labels or the legend that appears in the chart area.
